But McQuarrie believes in creating coherent set-pieces: His combat scenes are tense, muscular, and clean, shot and edited in such a way that the spatial geography makes sense. Ethan Hunt has never met an impossible mission, and yet, for the thrill to work, audiences need to believe that this one could get away from him.
